Tribal bear design
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black silhouette of a bear walking side on, facing right with its head raised. The body is filled with flowing tribal swirls and flame-like white cut-outs that suggest fur and muscle. The design is shown in black on a plain white background, with no skin or body part visible.

Mrs Okonedo had left the ovens banked low, and Tomasz had been told not to touch the tray of rye until the bell at the church rang five. So at half past four, with flour still drying on his forearms, he stood at the back door and listened to the lane. Nothing moved but the gutter water and the tick of cooling brick.

Then the dark at the end of the lane shifted its shape. It was a bear, black as a coal scuttle, walking the cobbles the way a man walks home after a long shift, unhurried and heavy in the shoulders. Its fur was not fur exactly. Along its flanks ran pale curling cuts, like flame licking up the side of a kettle, so that when it passed under the lamp at the corner the light went right through it and it seemed to burn without heat.
Tomasz did not run. His grandfather had told him that bears were interested in bread and not in boys, provided the boy did not stand in the way. So he lifted the rye from the tray with the wooden peel, set it on the step, and stepped back inside. The bear stopped. It raised its head, nostrils working, and looked at the loaf for a long moment, then at him, with an expression he could only call professional.
When the bell rang five, the step was empty and the loaf was gone. In its place, on the flagstone, lay a single curl of white ash, shaped exactly like a flame. Mrs Okonedo swept it up before she saw it, and Tomasz never told her, though he left a rye loaf on the step every morning after that and it was never once still there at dawn.
