Tribal howling wolf design

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A bold black line drawing of a wolf's head in profile, with its jaw open and muzzle raised as if howling. The fur and face are built from thick, angular tribal shapes and interlocking spiral lines. The design is drawn in solid black ink on plain white paper, with no shading or colour.

You lift the shutter on Gill Street at ten to four, and the cold slides in under it like a dog that has waited all night. Flour hangs in the lamplight. Nobody has told you yet that Mrs Okafor's rye has slumped in its tins, so you knead a fresh batch by hand, elbows deep, until the dough goes smooth and tight as a drum skin.

Den Halloran used to say the bread knows whether you are listening. He had a wolf on his forearm, angular black shapes that looked cut from slate, and he would hold that arm up to the oven glow as if the animal were sniffing the heat. You never asked what it meant. You ask now, to the empty room, while you roll the dough into a long rope, coil it into a spiral and slice it into buns with the bench knife.

By half four the buns are proving in their tins, a field of pale whorls. The street is quiet except for the hum of the extractor. Then a sound rises from the back yard, long and cracked, a note that climbs and bends. It is only wind in the drainpipe, but you open your mouth and answer it, low and then high, the way Den taught you to call the delivery lads when the van was late.

Across the road a window lights. A man in a dressing gown lifts his head, and somewhere past the bins a second voice joins, then a third, until the whole street seems to wake one howl at a time. You slide the first tray into the oven. The door shuts with a soft thud, and the bread begins to rise to meet the dark.
