Tribal biohazard symbol design
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a bold black symbol resembling a biohazard trefoil, with three curved outer arcs and a central cut-out pattern. The linework is thick and solid with no shading, so the shapes read as flat silhouettes. The design is set on a plain white background and uses only black ink.

The snow has come over the saddle before you've finished the last stencil, so you work by the stove in the hut at Cold Gate with the knife in one hand and the card braced under your knee. Three curved arcs, a hollow at the centre, a point hanging below like a drip of wax. The veterinary office in the valley wants forty of them by morning, one for every post along the road, and the clerk who sent the order did not say why. You have learned not to ask. The sickness that came through the Harrow flock last April took eleven ewes and a shepherd's son, and nobody up here has forgotten it.

Outside, the wind keeps trying the shutters. You cut the inner curves slowly, because a mark like this needs clean edges or it reads as a smudge, and the old men in the village say a smudge is how a road gets forgotten. Halfway through the third arc your wrist slips and the blade bites an extra notch into the card, a sliver of black that bends the whole shape out of true. You consider starting again. Then you look at it properly and see a bird with its wings folded against the weather, and you think of Ruth Pell at the lower bridge, who asked last week whether there was any way to make the signs look less like warnings.
In the morning you nail the stencils to the posts with tacks from your coat pocket. Ruth comes up the track with a barrow of bread and stops at the crooked one. She tilts her head, then nods. By the time the snow clears, the herders have painted their own marks beside yours, and the one with the broken wing has become the sign every shepherd follows to the pass. The clerk in the valley never notices, and you are glad of it.
