Tribal phoenix with spread wings
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a stylised phoenix drawn as a solid black design on a plain white background. Its wings sweep outwards and upwards in bold, pointed tribal-style shapes, with a small bird head and tail forming the centre. The design uses only solid black fills and tapering contours, with no shading or colour, and it is centred in the frame.

Every spring the sand came over the Sabbah road faster than the carts could cut it, and every spring the old bird came down off the ridge to beat it back. Nobody in Tarn Halsa had seen its face. They saw the wings, long and black and split into points like the tips of a thorn bush, and they saw the wind lift off the track in front of them as it passed.

Hamid the water-seller climbed the ridge the year his brother's goats died in a drift. He carried a waterskin, a dull knife and a loaf with the crust cracked. At the top a bird sat in the ash of a dead acacia, small in the head and wide in the shoulder, its tail trailing like a fire gone out. 'You are the one who clears my road,' he said. The bird lifted one wing, and every feather on it was pointed like a spear, as if flame had been cut and set still.
'I want the road kept open,' Hamid said. 'Then you will keep it,' the bird answered, in a voice like paper folding. 'Give me your bread.' He did. The bird broke the loaf, ate one half and gave him back the other with ash on it. 'Eat that when the sand comes.' He walked down, and for nine years the road stayed open while Hamid grew old at the well, selling water to anyone who passed.
When he died they buried him at the top of the ridge, beside the fallen acacia. In the morning the drovers found the track swept clean for a mile, and in the sand beside it a pattern of long pointed marks, a pair of wings spread wide, with no wind to account for them.
