Tribal bird-headed warrior design
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A standing warrior figure with a bird-like head and a tall feathered headdress, drawn in bold solid black tribal patterns. The body is filled with swirling and angular negative-space shapes, and a chain hangs from one hand down to the feet. The design is shown alone on a plain white background with no skin visible.

The chain is heavier on the nights the tide runs backwards. You learned that in your first season at the Sluice Gate, when the old keeper showed you how to walk its length without letting a single link touch the wet stone. Every link is a name the lagoon claimed. You count them under your breath while the pumps grind below, and you never once let the count reach the end.

Visitors from the inland domes ask why a sentinel must drag a rusted length of iron across the causeway each dawn. You tell them it keeps the sea honest. Really it keeps you honest. The keeper's rule is simple: carry what you were given, add nothing, and leave the gate shut to anyone who arrives with a lantern and no name.
Last month a girl came through the fog holding a lantern and a shard of tile painted with a bird's eye. She said her grandmother had owned the other half. You knelt, took the shard, and fitted it against the broken edge of the gate. It matched. The chain rang once, softly, and for the first time you felt a link come loose in your palm.
You unhook the last link and drop it into the water. It sinks without a sound. Then you lift the latch with your own hand, and the lagoon, for the first time in your life, lets the light come through.
