Angular helmet with tall blade
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a stylised, mask-like helmet with a long, tapering blade rising vertically from the top. The head is built from fractured, angular facets filled with dense hatching, and white slivers cut through the dark areas to suggest light. The image is black ink on plain white paper, centred with generous empty space around the figure.

Mind the net, that's the good twine, and don't you pull at the cork line before I've finished, because the sea does not forgive a hurry. Old Tam Greig didn't look up from his mending needle, and the boy beside him kept his hands in his lap as if a lesson had been taught.

Your grandfather hauled that helm up in the winter of the big gale, the year the Mary Ann went down off the Skerries. It came up tangled in the trawl, black as a gutted mackerel and twice as cold, with a blade standing out of the crown like a fin. Nobody wanted it aboard. Men in the fleet don't care to bring up what the sea has chosen to keep, but he unhooked it with his bare hands, and it sat in the bottom of the boat all the way to the harbour wall. Every time he glanced at it, the light off the water seemed to crack across its face.
The Mary Ann's skipper, Henry Lowe, had never once turned back for a dropped line. Folk said he rowed out to the wreck to pull a drowned crew from the hold and came home with nothing but that helm on his shoulder and a silence that lasted years. Nobody asked him where he'd found it. Nobody needed to.
So when you're out past the Skerries and the mist comes down thick, don't go hunting for the blade in the dark. Watch for the thin white line where the water breaks, because that's where it stands, keeping its own count of the boats that came home and the ones that didn't. Now give me that twine before you tangle the lot.
