Tribal dragon design with red eye
Blackwork · Mixed · Flash
A dragon head in profile curls into a long, tapering body with sweeping tribal-style bands. The design is built from bold solid black shapes with white linework for the scales and jaw. A small red eye is the only colour against the white background.

The bridge at Scarrow Ford had a dragon under it, and everyone on both banks knew it, because it had never once been wrong. Its head lay along the stones in the shallows, black as wet slate, and its long body coiled up the pilings and wound round the rail like ribbon round a maypole. Only its eye had any colour. When a traveller lied at the crossing, the eye turned the red of a coal blown on.

One autumn a salt carter called Maud Ellery came down the Lower Road with four mules and a cart that smelled of smoke. The toll was owed to Hendry Cask, the crossing clerk, who had taken a little more each year and kept the difference in a tin box under his bed. Maud stopped her mules at the first post. "Salt," she said, and the eye stayed grey. "And a bell from the chapel at Upper Harrow, which I took because they owed my father money." The eye flickered but did not burn. The dragon let her through, and she heard it sigh through the water like a dropped sack.
Hendry was waiting on the far bank with his ledger open. He told the mules to wait, he told Maud the tolls were rising, and each lie he told made the red in the water spread further up the stones. By the time he had finished, the whole pier glowed like a forge door. Maud did not stay to watch. She heard the ledger hit the river, then his shouting, then nothing at all.
In spring the toll-house stood empty with its shutters open. Someone had carried the chapel bell back up the hill. The children of both valleys say that if you cross Scarrow Ford and tell the water your own name, the eye stays grey, and the dragon coils a little tighter round the rail, as if pleased to have something to hold.
