Tribal cat with swirling vines on skin
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A stylised cat with pointed ears and a curled tail is drawn in solid dark ink, with the body forming a loop around a heart-like shape. Thin flowing swirls and vine-like curls extend outward from the figure across the skin. The design is shown in a single dark ink tone against light skin, with a yellow fabric edge on the left of the frame.

The tea chests have shifted again, and you are the only one aboard who notices, which is why the bosun calls you the purser's conscience. Off Cape Finisterre the swell has the Marguerite Hale rolling like a drunk, and you keep to the lee of the hatch, tail curled tight around your feet, watching the galley door where Cook tips the fish heads.

Sailors say a ship's cat chooses her crew by sitting on their chest at night. You chose Ada Pell, the second mate's boy, who was sick for nine days out of Liverpool and wept into his hammock. You sat on him anyway. Warmth was the only medicine aboard you could offer, and you gave it freely, the way the rail's brass fittings take the spray without complaint.
Off the Horn the sea turns to iron, and a man goes over the side during the second watch. Nobody sees him go. You do, because you are always watching the places where things fall away. Ada stands at the rail until dawn, and you climb up beside him, pressed against his shoulder, a small dark weight that does not leave until the light comes up grey and the rope is coiled again.
At Valparaíso the master pays off the crew, and Ada asks whether the cat might come ashore with him. The master says cats go where they please. You have already gone down the gangway, tail high, nose full of oranges and tar, and you do not look back at the hull. Ada follows, calling your name in the wrong accent, and you wait at the bottom of the gangway with your tail curled into the shape of a question mark, which is the only answer a sailor's cat ever gives.
