Tribal clock tattoo on upper back
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A bold black tribal design sits on the upper back, with a round clock face at its centre showing the numerals 12, 3, 6 and 9 and hands set at about ten past eleven. Thick, solid tribal swirls and tapering curved shapes wrap above and below the clock, and the design is in black ink only on a pale, softly lit skin tone.

Ada Vell kept the clock in the kitchen at Low Scarth, a brass-rimmed thing her grandfather had carried home from Kendal on a cart. When the frost came down in December, its hands stopped at ten past eleven and would not be coaxed on. She wound it, oiled it, and held it to the window in case the sun could shame it into moving. Nothing.

The wind came off the fell that night, black and coiling, and wrapped the barn the way rope binds a post. Her brother Tom said it was only weather. Eli Harker, the old shepherd, said the wind wanted paying, because winter borrows time from every farm and someone must carry the debt. So Ada took the lantern and the clock under her arm, walked the wall to the stile, and set the clock down on the cold stone.
The wind found it like a dog finds a dropped crust. It slid through the hollows of the face, curled around the numerals, and lifted each one out of its place and set it back again in the frost. When it had taken its fill it went quiet, and the minute hand crept a hair, then another, until it stood upright at the twelve and the hour hand pushed on towards three.
Ada carried it home still ticking. Next morning the lane was clear, the barn roof was white, and Tom asked what she had given the wind. She said only the eleven o'clock, and that it was welcome to it. The clock still hangs in the kitchen, and it still says ten past eleven, but she has never once been late for anything since.
