The key opened the tack room at Hollin Fold, a door nobody had locked since before my father died. Inside, the saddles smelled of neatsfoot oil and mouse. On the hook by the window hung the tin of ribbons she'd kept for the county shows, mint green and faded at the folds. I tied one round the shaft that night, the way she used to tie ear tags on the lambs, because the bow looked like something a person ought to bother with.

Brenda came up the lane from the next farm in the Land Rover the morning after the blizzard, her breath steaming over the wheel. She saw the ribbon and gave a short laugh. "She tied that on the year you were born," she said. "Said a key ought to look like it was going somewhere nice." I didn't know what to say, so I held the key out. She turned it over in her gloved palm, and the silver scroll at its head caught the low sun like wet pewter.
