Tribal creature on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a stylised creature with a sharp, spiked tail section and a rounded head, drawn in heavy black linework. A small patch of red sits near the head, and the design runs diagonally along the forearm. The pale skin stands out against a dark red background.

The creature had been coming down to the mill race every evening since the thaw, and Mrs Pargeter swore it was the same beast that had taken the Hollis boy's cat in March. Nobody in Yelling Fen had ever seen it clearly. They saw a shape slipping between the reeds, a tail like a broken fence paling, and then a flick of red near the mouth when the lamplighter came round.

Tom Adey went down with a lantern and a bucket of eels he had no intention of giving away. He sat on the sluice gate with his boots over the black water and waited, because his father had told him that anything hungry will come to the one who sits still longest.
It came just after the church clock struck nine. Its head broke the surface, round as a bread roll, and it looked at him with a slow, unhurried attention that made him feel like a sum being checked. The tail lifted behind it, long and jagged, cutting the water into bright stripes of moon.
"You'll want the eels," he said, and his voice cracked on it.
The creature opened its mouth, and the red inside was the colour of the ribbon his sister had lost at the fair. It did not take the eels. It took the lantern instead, gently, between its teeth, and sank without a ripple. In the morning the mill race ran clear, and Tom found the bucket on the bank, full, with a single red thread wound round its handle.
