Cartoon character in a feathered cap on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a cartoon boy in a feathered cap, seen in profile and leaning forward, with a small feather rising from the hat. It is drawn in a single continuous black outline with no shading, and the clean, even line gives the figure a sketch-like look. The design sits diagonally across the forearm on plain, lightly lit skin against a dark background.

Dear Nell,

The rain has been coming down on the Saturday market since seven, so nobody's bought a thing but a bag of chips and a bad umbrella. I've spent the morning under the awning of Mr Okafor's fruit stall with a box of secondhand sheet music, pretending to sort it. You'll laugh, but I found the hat today, the little green one with the single feather, tucked between a tin of buttons and a broken clock radio. Someone had taped a note to it that said "for the boy who won't come down".
Not the sort of thing you'd expect to find on a stall in Leeds, is it? I asked the woman selling it, a Mrs Dhillon with a voice like gravel, where it came from. She said her late brother had bought it from a man who ran a puppet theatre in Hull, and it had sat in a shoebox for thirty years. She wanted two pounds. I gave her five, and she gave me the feather as well, which she'd pulled out and wrapped in tissue paper.
I keep thinking about that note. Who writes to a hat? I've decided it must have been a child, and that the child grew up and stopped believing and couldn't bear to throw the thing away. Or perhaps the boy simply wouldn't come down, and that was the whole joke, and everyone was in on it except the hat.
The feather is in my coat pocket now, and the rain has finally eased off. I'm going to walk home the long way, past the canal, and see if anyone's still out there leaning over the railings, looking for something they lost.
Yours, Ruth
