Tribal dragon design
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black tribal-style dragon faces left, with a spined head, a wing-like frill and a long serpentine body that curls down the page. The linework is bold, with heavy black fills, sweeping swirls and tapering flame-like shapes along the mane and tail. The design is shown in black on a plain white background, with no colour and no body placement.

The lock at Stonebridge had been stuck since Michaelmas, so we tied up below it and waited for the water to find its own level. Dad said the river always wins in the end, which is why he never fought it. I was twelve and thought he was simply lazy.

The dragon came up out of the cut the second night, black as a puddle of boot polish, its head breaking the surface beside the hull. It did not look at me. It looked at the coal we carried, then at the cabin lamp, and its frilled crest opened like a fan of burnt paper. The swirls along its back turned over in the current like smoke that had learned to swim.
Dad went out on the gunwale with the boathook and a tin of tar. He told it, very politely, that the Gaunt Lady was not for sale and that we were only passing through. The dragon curled its tail around the bow and stayed. Its flame-shaped fins flickered whenever the lamp did, and by dawn the mud had soaked through to its belly and it looked more like a river than a beast.
We unloaded at Harrow Wharf three days later, and I have never seen the thing again. But on the cabin door, where Dad had painted the boat's name, there is now a long black sweep of ink that no brush made, and every time the water rises it seems to lift a little, as if something beneath is still counting the locks.
