Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

Dear Tom, the gulls have stopped landing on the rail since Tuesday, which Father says means a blow is coming up from the south-west, though he said the same thing about the cow in the lower field and it turned out to be a wasp. I am writing this on the back of the tide tables because the kitchen table is covered in the pieces of the wireless he has been trying to mend for a month.

You will remember the eagle on the gatepost at Carrick Head, the one with the hooked beak and the stiff black crest that looked like someone had dragged a brush through tar. Mrs Penhallow says it came in off the cliffs the winter the Scotia went down and has never once looked at a living soul without looking through them. I went up on Sunday with a bag of herring heads, meaning to make peace, and it did not so much as turn its head. It only lifted the feathers along its neck, one long flame at a time, the way the sea lifts before it breaks.

I think it is waiting for someone to come back up the path with a lantern. I have decided I will be the one, if you are not coming home by the spring. Bring your oilskins, the good ones, and tell Father I have borrowed his compass, which I have. Do not tell him where I have hidden the tide book. Your sister, Nell.

P.S. I put the herring heads on the post anyway. It has eaten every one.
