Tribal fish design on the hip

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare midriff and hip show a large black tribal tattoo of swirling bands, spirals and a stylised fish head. The linework is solid and bold with little or no shading, and the design curves across the hip towards the waistband. The image is in black and grey tones against warm skin, with a navel piercing and a hand with rings at the right edge.

The spiral was the first thing my uncle cut into the bow of the Teuira, before he taught me any knots, because he said a boat needs to know which way the water turns. He carved it with a shark's tooth and a lump of cold tallow, and it took him three evenings to get the curl right. Every boy on Motu Ano thought he was mad to spend so long on a sea-mark nobody would see once the paint went on.

The fish came in the winter the reef went quiet. Hautu, the old net-mender, said it was a parrotfish that had lost its way out of the lagoon and was circling because the tide had turned it once too often. I thought that was nonsense until I saw it: a dark shape curling through the channel, round and round, its head always pointed at our hull. My uncle stood at the stern with his hands in his pockets and said nothing for a long time.

When I finally asked him what it wanted, he laughed and nodded at the carving on the bow. "It wants the spiral," he said. "Anything the current catches has to go round once before it can go out. Let it finish." So we sat and let the water carry us round with it, three times, four, until the fish flicked its tail and slid over the reef edge into the deep blue. The channel lay flat after that, as though someone had smoothed it with a palm.

That night I took a stick of charcoal and drew the curl on the back of my hand, the way he had shown me, starting from the middle and working outwards. It was gone by morning. The one on the bow has never faded.
