Tribal goat head design

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A bold solid black silhouette of a goat's head with two swept-back curled horns, a diamond-shaped motif between the eyes and a pointed beard. The design uses flat black fills with white cut-out details for the eyes and muzzle, giving a stark, graphic tribal look. It is shown in black ink on a plain white background with no body part visible.

Mind the step, it's loose, same as the rest of this house. You'll want the back bedroom with the window on the harbour, though I'd not sleep with it open. The goat came up the lane the summer the Pelletier boy drowned, and it stood under that window three nights running, looking at the glass with pale eyes like it had lost a bet.

Old Mrs Tregenza swore it had horns that swept back like the prow of a lugger, and a little white diamond between the brows, bright as a lamp on the water. Nobody argued with her. Her husband had gone out past the breakwater in a squall and come back in with his beard full of weed, saying a black goat had walked him to the bell buoy and then simply stopped, the way a man stops at a gate he is not allowed through.

I went down to the quay myself the next morning with a bucket of mash, because a boarding house feeds its guests whatever comes up the lane. The goat was on the harbour wall, sharp as a cut-paper shape against the grey. It let me set the bucket down, then turned its pointed beard to the sea and bleated once, low, the sound a ship's bell makes when the tide is going out and there is nobody left to ring it.

So the window stays shut. Mrs Tregenza has been dead four years and the goat is still there some mornings, black on the white stones, waiting for someone to walk out to the buoy with it. I have never once gone. Pass me that candle, would you, and mind the stair.
