Tribal bull head design
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A bold tribal design of a bull or horned animal head, drawn in solid black shapes with a symmetrical, front-facing composition. The horns sweep outward and curl at the tips, and the face is formed from flowing tapered blades with small spiral details at the eyes and muzzle. The image is a single flat black ink design on a plain white background with no colour.

Sit down, you lot, and keep your hands off that rum till I've finished. You want to know why the Mary Ellen Tressa carried a bull's head on her bow and not a mermaid like every other honest ship? Because her carver, old Jethro Pell, had horns on the brain. He'd lost a fortnight's wages to a Hereford bull at Penzance market, and he swore the beast had looked at him the way a magistrate looks at a thief.

So he cut her a bull, but not a plain one. He cut it in solid black, in the old tribal way his brother had brought home from the Marquesas, all tapered blades and tight spirals, the horns sweeping out like a pair of oars laid flat. Every curl was meant to turn a wave aside. That was the idea, anyway.
Three winters out past the Horn, with the Tressa half-foundered and the crew praying in three languages, a squall came over the bow sideways and the figurehead took it full in the face. Jethro's blades caught the wind and split it. Men swore the spirals spun it round like a dog chasing its tail, and the sea went under the keel instead of over.
Nobody believed that, and I don't ask you to. But the ship limped into Valparaiso with her bull's head still whole, and Jethro rowed ashore with his pockets full of chalk. He drew that design on the harbour wall so every sailor after him could copy it onto his own skin, horns for luck and black ink for stubbornness. The chalk's long washed away, but the sailors still come back to that wall to have it done. Now pass that bottle along, and mind the spirals. They bite.
