Tribal rhino design drawn on paper
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A bold black tribal rhino head in profile, with a large horn, a smaller horn, a curled spiral near the eye and sweeping swirls along the jaw and body. The design is built from solid black marker shapes with tapering points and no shading, and it sits centred on a sheet of white paper on a wooden table. A hand holding a grey marker is visible at the right edge.

The ferry was already leaning when Nell reached the bank, and the rhinoceros was standing in the shallows as though it had paid for the crossing. Nobody on the Orrin had seen one before. Old Haskett swore it had walked up from the salt marshes with its head low, parting the reeds like curtains, and that its great horn had snapped a fence post clean in two on the way.

Her father wanted it moved on. The men argued with their poles planted in the silt while the beast watched them with small, patient eyes. The dark swirls along its shoulders seemed to shift when the water shifted, as if the current had been drawn onto its hide. Nell noticed that the spiral above its eye turned the same way as the whirlpool below the weir. She said nothing. She had learned that a river keeps its own counsel.
At dusk it waded to the far bank, flicked its tail once, and went into the willows. Next morning the weir had run clear of the drifts that had choked it all spring, and a spiral the size of a dinner plate had been pressed into the mud of the landing, as neat as a seal on a letter. Her father hauled the ferry back onto its rope without a word. He never mentioned the rhinoceros again, though he kept a board over the print and, when the water ran high, Nell caught him standing at the edge of the landing looking down at it.
