Tribal horse head design
Black and grey · Flash
A solid black horse head in profile, facing left, with a flowing mane that breaks into flame-like tribal swirls and tapering points. The linework is bold and mostly solid black with negative white shapes creating the eye, muzzle and curled detail. The design is shown alone on a plain white background in black ink only.

Mother Agnes always said the grey mare came up out of the harbour mist on the morning the lifeboat went out for the last time, and that her mane was burning even though the rain fell hard enough to drown a lamp. Nobody in Porthcadan believed her, but they stopped arguing when the boat came back without Tom Hesketh at the tiller and his brother Sam still shaking in the bow. So the children were told to keep their boots dry and their eyes on the water, and the old women said that a horse with fire in her hair would only ever show herself to those who had nothing left to lose.

I was nine the summer the mare first came to the slipway. She stood with her head turned to the sea, sharp as a blade cut from a black slate, and every flame off her mane curled back against the wind as if it were trying to get away from her. My father put down his net and walked straight to her. He said later that her eye was white as a gull's breast and she looked at him the way a magistrate looks at a man who has finally owned up. Then she turned and went into the surf without a splash, and the swell closed over her like a page turning.
That was the year the harbour finally got its new pier. The men say the mare had a hand in it, though they never agree on which way she pushed. What I know is that when the storm came in October, the fleet was all home before the first wave broke, and not one of them had been called by a bell or a shout. Sam Hesketh still keeps a black horse carved on his door. He tells the children that the sea is only a field, and that somewhere past the breakwater a mare is running with her mane on fire, bringing the boats in one by one.
