The block was cherry wood, and it had been on my bench since Thursday, so when Mr Dacre came up the stairs wanting his handbill by six, I told him it would be dry by six and was not at all sure of it. I cut the ears first, the way Father taught me, because a horse with the wrong ears is a donkey, and nobody buys a donkey at Beverley Fair.

The mane was the trouble. It wanted to be the largest thing on the page. I cut it in long hooked strokes that ran down from the poll and left the neck white, and when I pulled the proof the black came up so thick it looked wet, as though the animal had just walked out of a storm. Dacre stood over the bench with his cold tea and said, 'She's a grey, lad.' I told him greys print dark at first light, which was a lie, and he knew it, and we both let it stand.
The mare on the handbill had gone to a carter from Hedon a week before. Dacre had never told the printers that, and I only learned it from the carter himself, who came in for a sheet to wrap his lunch. By the time the sun came over the Humber, the first hundred copies were drying on the washing line, and the horse on every one of them was looking left, away from the town, the way that grey had looked at the gate the morning she was led off. Dacre pinned one to the Corn Exchange door anyway. Nobody came for the sale. Everybody stopped to look at the mane.
