Tribal howling wolf head design
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A stylised wolf head in profile, with its muzzle raised and mouth open as if howling. The design is built from bold black tribal shapes and swirling interior lines, with no shading or grey tones. It is shown in solid black on a plain off-white background, with the fur along the neck rendered as sharp, flowing points.

The wolves had gone quiet in the high valley of Caddren for three winters, and the herders of Vell Ostmark had stopped counting their sheep at dusk, because the count was always short and there was nobody to blame but the snow. Then, on the night the old queen's salt barrels ran empty, a grey she-wolf came down from the ridge with her muzzle lifted to the stars and began to howl.

Tamsin Hollow, the shepherd's youngest, went up the slope with a lantern because her father was too proud to go and her mother too tired. The wolf did not run. She stood on a shelf of black rock and sang out long and low, her throat working like a bellows, and from the far side of the pass came answering voices, one after another, until the whole mountain seemed to be calling.
The queen's council said the wolves were cursed and must be hunted out of the valley. Tamsin told them what she had heard, and the council laughed at her until the morning the pack came down in a line, thin as rakes, and sat at the edge of the pastures without touching a single lamb. The herders understood then that the valley had been wintering the wolves out for years, and that a country which drives off its own calls will go silent.
The queen had a gate carved that spring, and on it a wolf's head in profile, muzzle raised, mouth open, its ruff cut into sharp points like frost on a window. Each autumn, when the first snow came, someone in Vell Ostmark climbs to the shelf of black rock and howls, and the answer always comes back over the pass.
