In the year the bells of Veltharn stopped ringing, the master carver Oswin Dray was told to finish the lion for the north gate, though the old king was already dead and nobody was paying for it anymore. He had cut the beast in grey granite, walking forward on heavy paws, but the mane was still only a block of stone.

His apprentice, Ilse, a girl from the salt flats with no family left to miss her, carved the flames by lamplight. She worked the mane in tongues that curled back on themselves, black where the stone sat in shadow and pale where the light would catch. Oswin insisted the lion must look back at the city, because a guard who turns his head is a guard who sees the enemy coming. Ilse thought a lion should only look at what it wanted.

When the siege came in the autumn, the gate held far longer than it should have. The bakers said the lion's eyes followed the soldiers along the wall. Ilse, climbing up to scrub moss from its tail, noticed that the weather had worn its face so that it now gazed down the river road, toward the boats that had not come.

Oswin died that winter. Ilse kept a lamp burning at the gate every night after, and in spring she cut one more curl into the mane where the shadow fell, so that anyone coming up the road would see the lion turning to look at the town, as though it had been waiting for them to come home.
