Snow had buried the north road by the third day, and the innkeeper at Ashwell Crossing had stopped hoping for travellers. Her name was Maud Tennant, and she kept the fire banked with wet peat so it would last the night. On the fourth evening a stranger knocked, carrying a lantern with no flame in it, and asked for a bed in exchange for one story.

Maud said she had no stories worth paying for. The stranger shrugged and sat by the hearth. He told her of a lion who lived high in the hills where the wind never stopped, whose mane had grown so long that it curled up around his head and spilled down past his shoulders like smoke from a chimney. The villagers below were afraid of him, so they stopped climbing, and the lion grew lonely. His mane grew wilder still, its scrolls twisting upward until they seemed to burn.
Maud asked how it ended. The stranger said the snow came down and the lion lay in it and did not move, because a lion with no one to roar at forgets how to keep warm. Then one winter a girl climbed up with a bowl of broth and sat beside him until morning. When the sun rose, the mane had settled, and the curls lay flat and soft against his neck.
When Maud looked up, the bench was empty and the lantern sat lit on the table. Outside, the snow had stopped. In the drift beside the door were the prints of a large animal walking away, and between them lay a single curl of dark hair, twisted like a flame.
