He did not chase the blackbirds. He did not sit on the seed trays or knock over the cold frame the way the vicar's spaniel had. He sat upright on the warm brick path with his tail wrapped round his feet like a ribbon left over from a parcel, and he shut his eyes against the sun. Mrs Hollis came to understand that this was how he listened.
She tried to name him. Pilot, after a plane that had come down over the allotments in the war, which her mother had described to her in great detail. Then Sexton, then Ash. None of them stuck. He answered to nothing but the rattle of the tin where she kept the dried mealworms, and even that he took with his eyes still closed.
In August the heat broke with a storm that stripped two of the pears. She found him the next morning on the bench under the wall, dry and upright, the white lines of his coat as straight as raked gravel, watching the broken fruit with an expression she could only call disappointment. She picked one up, bruised and sweet. "Well," she said, "you were listening to the right thing, weren't you." He opened one eye, then closed it again.
