Ornate owl holding a key
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A front-facing owl with wide eyes, a feathered crown and a heavily patterned body fills most of the frame, perched on an ornate antique key. The image is built from fine pen linework, stippled dots and layered hatching that describe the feathers, facial disc and wings. It is rendered in black ink on white with no colour, and the design is shown without any skin or body part.

Dear Tom, the owl came back to the winding house the night after they lowered the last of the Hartley men, and it has sat on the frame above the cage every night since, looking down at us with those great ringed eyes as if it were counting. Mam says it is only a barn owl that strayed from the Wrekin farms, but barn owls are pale and this one is silver and grey, feathered like a Sunday hat, and it will not be shooed.

The key came with it. I found it on the Thursday, tangled in the wire of the pit-head fence, an old iron thing as long as my forearm, with a bow worked like a rose and a bit cut into teeth like a comb. I took it to Mr Doyle at the office, and he said it was the key to the old lamp store, locked since before the fire, and that nobody living had the matching door. He laughed when I said the owl had brought it. He stopped laughing when I told him it had set the key down on our step as neat as a butler.
I have not told anyone the rest. Last night I went up with a bull's-eye lantern and the key in my apron pocket. The owl sat on the rafter above the lamp store door and watched me the way Mam watches a bad penny. The key went warm and heavy in my hand, and the lock turned with a click like a held breath. Inside, under the dust, there are forty-one lamps with their names scratched into the brass, and the last one, nearest the door, has your name on it.
I am not writing so you will come home sooner. I am writing so you know the key is in my pocket, the owl is watching, and I have kept your lamp lit. Love, Ellen
