Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large solid black tribal phoenix with wings spread wide, a stylised head and flame shapes along the body. The tail tapers down the lower back and ends in circular motifs with swirling linework. Black ink only on smooth skin, photographed straight on with a plain indoor background.

Edith had been burning the hedge clippings for an hour when the smoke began to lean east, flat and black across the allotments, as if something large had shaken its wings above the bonfire. She stood with the rake and watched it. Her neighbour Mr Okafor shouted over the fence that it was going to rain, which it wasn't, and went back to his beans.

The bird came down the slope at dusk, though nobody saw it land. What Edith found instead was the tail: a scorched path of spirals pressed into the frosted lawn beside the compost heap, each loop ending in a ring of cinders that still held a faint warmth. She knelt and traced one with her finger. The ash smelled of bay and wet paper, and somewhere under the hedge a rusted watering can rang once, as though struck.
She did not sleep that night. At first light she carried a tin bucket of cold water to the spot, and then, because the spirals seemed to want something, a handful of seed from her coat pocket, marigold and nasturtium, the last of the year. She pressed them into the ash rings one by one. By the end of the week the beds beside the compost were blazing orange, and the bird, if it was a bird, had folded itself back into the smoke and gone up over the hill towards the sea, leaving her with a garden that would not stop flowering until the frost.
