Tribal spiral armband designs on body silhouettes
Upper arm · Black and grey · Flash
A digital illustration of black tribal designs built from spirals, curls and bold scrolling shapes, placed over faint grey silhouettes of standing figures. Three shoulder and upper arm pieces sit above a larger central spiral motif, with a patterned band running across the bottom. The design uses solid black ink on white with grey figures in the background, and the composition is centred and symmetrical.

The proving cupboard is ticking like a cooling engine, and you have already scored the first tray before the sky has any colour in it. Flour dusts the bench and your forearms, and your hands know the work without asking: fold, turn, press, fold again, until the dough springs back under a thumb the way it's supposed to. Nobody else is up on Harbour Street. Only the gulls, and the radio on the shelf murmuring about fog.

Your gran drew spirals on the back of every order slip she ever wrote. A curl that tightens inward, then breaks open at the end like a fern deciding to stand up. She called it the fern and said it never hurried. You thought she meant slow. Now, with cinnamon sugar on your palm, you cut the first coil into each dough rope and twist it so the layers show, and you think she meant patient, which is a different thing.
At quarter to five the oven door sticks, as it always does, and you swear at it in a voice she never let you use. A delivery driver knocks on the glass to ask if you're open. The shutter goes up at six, you tell him. He looks past you at the trays and says he'll wait. So you slide one warm scroll through the gap, still too hot to hold, and watch him juggle it into his jacket as if it might bite.
By the time the car park greys over, the scrolls sit cooling on the rack in rows, every curl turned the same way. You chalk the day's board in your own handwriting, a small fern in the corner where she used to sign off, and unlock the door before the first customer reaches the step.
