Spiral flame emblem in white line art
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a tribal-style emblem drawn in white lines on a solid black background. Flame-like tongues rise from a rectangular base marked with horizontal bars, and several curling spirals sit within the flames and against a large crescent shape on the right. The linework is bold and uniform, with no shading or grey tones, and the composition is centred and self-contained.

The cook on the salt barque Marrowgate kept one pot lit through every storm, and the crew said it was because her grandmother had carried the coals across the Ness in a clay bowl when the village burned. Nobody asked for the story twice. It came out in pieces, like the fire itself, when the bread was rising and the wind was loud.

On the night the boat lost its mast off the Cauldron Reef, Isla Brannock stood at the galley hatch with her sleeves rolled and told the boy Tam to feed the stove splinters from the broken spar. He cried that the wood was wet. She said wet wood smokes and smoke finds the sky, and the sky would want to see where they were. So he fed it. The flames climbed up the iron flue in tongues, curling back on themselves as they went, and the crescent moon came out from behind the cloud like a bowl turned on its side.
By morning the sea had gone flat and grey, and the Marrowgate drifted into the mouth of the harbour with her galley chimney still breathing. The harbourmaster said he had watched the spirals of smoke from the headland and thought the town was burning again. Isla gave him a loaf of black bread still warm from the stove. Tam kept the splinter he had been feeding the fire, a curled sliver of oak, and he carried it in his pocket for the rest of his life.
