Sheet of paisley and floral tattoo flash designs

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a grid of sixteen separate black designs arranged in four rows of four on a white background. Each motif combines paisley-like curls, scrolling vines, leaves and stylised flower heads, with some built from dense dotted and hatched fill. The designs are drawn in solid black ink with no colour or shading gradients, and each is cut out cleanly from its neighbours.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Carrow was the only girl in Hollin Pit who could draw a curl that didn't look like a question. Her father cleaned lamps at the top of the shaft, and when the chapel wives wanted new patterns for their cloths they came to her kitchen with flour on their hands. They asked for the flower with the thick petal, or the vine that went round twice and came back to where it started. Nell drew each one on the backs of spoiled wage slips, using a nib she kept in a tin of camphor.

The winter the water rose in the low workings, nineteen men were trapped below the third level. The overman said nothing could be done until the pumps were mended, and that could be a fortnight. Nell sat up three nights at her table and drew sixteen designs, each one a variant of the same vine, and pinned them to the lamp-room door. Her mother asked why she wasted good paper on frills. Nell said a man who knows a pattern by heart can follow it blind.

She had worked the rule into every sheet. The flower heads always turned towards the open air, and the dotted fill marked the places where the roof dripped. The men below had chalked the same scrolls on the timbers as they had seen on the cloths, so they could feel their way along the old drift with their palms. Where the chalk gave out, they followed the curl that pointed up.

On the fourth morning the pumps caught. Eighteen men walked out of the cage with their lamps dead and their hands raw. The nineteenth, Tom Ridley, was found three days later, sitting beneath a chalked vine with his thumb pressed into a flower head that faced the shaft. The dots there were smudged dark, as if he had been counting them. Nell kept the sixteen sheets. The fourth row, she always said, was the one to trust.
