The brig Ysolde lay becalmed for eleven days in a sea like poured tin, and by the fourth the water casks had begun to taste of the cooper's thumbs. Old Bram Tallow, who had sailed the Brazil run since before I was breeched, spent those idle hours with a marlinspike and a stub of charcoal, scratching a sun onto the underside of the mainboom. He drew it with a spiral at its heart, the way the island pilots had shown him, and he said the spiral was where the sun went to rest at night.

I asked him how a man finds his way by a sun that spins like a snail. He tapped the diamonds he had cut along the line below it, one above the spiral and one at the very bottom, and told me those were the true north and the true south, the two points a navigator never trusts to the wind. 'Keep your eye on the spikes,' he said. 'They point to where the air is moving before the sails feel it.'

On the twelfth morning a breeze came up from the west, thin as a thread, and Bram had the watch wake me before dawn. We stood at the rail while the sun lifted clean out of the water, and for a moment its rays fell exactly where his charcoal had shown them, the small dots of light flickering around the spiral like sparks off a forge.

We raised Lisbon four days later with half the crew sunburnt and sullen. Bram went ashore first and never came back to the ship. The boom still carries his sun, and when I sight along it at noon I still find my hand turning the wheel toward the spiral's centre, trusting it more than the compass in my pocket.
