The big top at Harrow Fell had lost its centre pole in the spring, and the canvas sagged like a wet sail over the sawdust. Mother Ansel sat on an upturned crate with a needle, mending the great black sun painted on the rear flap. Forty years of rain had greyed its rays, and the eight points of the star behind it had begun to peel at the tips. Nobody in the company could say why the sun mattered. They only knew the crowds in Lincoln would not buy a ticket under a tent without one.

Her grandson Tomas wanted to sell the wagons to a scrap man from Spalding. He said the brass lamps alone would keep the horses fed through the winter. Ansel did not argue. That night she walked him to the edge of the field where the ground dipped toward the drain, and she drew a spiral in the wet mud with the heel of her boot. "Walk it in," she said. "Walk it out. Don't look up until you reach the middle." He did as he was told. The wind dropped as he turned, and when he finally lifted his head the stars had swung round like a ring of faces waiting for him to speak.

In the morning the scrap man's cart was gone from the lane, and Tomas found his grandmother asleep in the ring with the needle still threaded. The sun on the flap was whole again, every ray sharp as a cut key, the star behind it bright as new tin. Years later, when the ring had shrunk to a single wagon, he drew the spiral for his own daughter in the mud by the drain. The rain filled the groove, and the sun lay in the water, waiting for her to walk it in first.
