Tribal spiral tattoo across upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large tribal-style design covers the upper back and shoulder, centred on a spiral with bold black curved arms radiating outward. The spiral and surrounding areas are filled with fine patterned linework, and the central spiral is shaded in soft blue-grey. The photograph is taken from behind at close range, with the subject's head cropped out of frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Your father never once let the boat near the Sound on the ebb, and I thought that was just his temper. Then Maggie Tulloch's boy went in off the Skerry Rock in March, and the whole harbour went quiet for a week. You'll have heard. I'm writing because the men keep asking where the spiral came from, the one he painted on the bow of the Hesper, and I've told them it was only a fancy.

It wasn't a fancy. He learnt it from old Iain Garvie, who learnt it from his grandmother, who drew it in the wet sand below the chapel each spring so the tide would know where to turn. Heavy arms curling out like the points of a sun, a fine ladder of hatching packed between them, and at the heart a little eye he shaded with the blue of deep water. He said if you followed the curve with your finger you could feel the pull of the race.

On the last morning he took the Hesper out alone and didn't tell me why. I watched from the slipway and saw the water go flat and dark in a ring, the way it does before the race turns, and I saw the boat go round once, neatly, like a needle finding its groove, and slip out the far side. He came back at noon with salt crusted in his beard and said nothing except that the sea had remembered him.

I've scrubbed the bow. The paint is still there under the grime, the spiral sitting pale and steady above the waterline. Come home at Easter and look at it, love, and tell me what you see. I can only see the way out.
