Tribal shoulder tattoo with spirals and circles

Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A bold black tribal design covers the shoulder and upper arm, built from a large solid circle, nested arcs and a tight spiral at the lower centre. Thick solid lines and tapered spikes radiate outward, with lighter shading across the curved sections. The design is entirely black and grey and fills most of the frame against a blue background.

You have been told not to touch the wheel until the frost leaves the forge door, but the wheel has already slid off its hook and rolled to your boots like a dog wanting attention. Old Hesketh says it was cast the winter the mill burned, a solid disc of black iron with a ring of arcs cut round its rim, and nobody in Thornwick Hollow has lifted it since.

You crouch and turn it over. On the underside, where the smoke never reached, a tight spiral has been scratched into the metal. It winds inward the way the path does through the birch wood at the edge of the village, tightening until a man has to stop and wonder whether he has come the same way twice. Hesketh watches from the bellows with his arms folded. "Don't read it," he says. "Mend it."

You take the file to the spikes that fan out from the disc, the thin tapered blades that once held the mill's sails in their housings. With each one you sharpen, the wheel seems lighter, until at dusk you lift it and it sits in your palms like a bowl of cold water. Hesketh nods once. The mill never ran again, but those blades still cut the reeds at the ford for anyone who needs them.

You hang the wheel back on its hook with the spiral turned to the wall. The forge light slides over the nested arcs and gutters out at the centre, leaving a small dark hole where a man could set his thumb and keep the thing turning.
