Six tribal turtle designs
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows six sea turtle designs arranged on a white background, each one a solid black silhouette filled with white linework. The shells carry spirals, concentric circles, triangles, zigzags and a central hibiscus flower, and the flippers are shaped with bold curves. The designs are composed as a set of separate motifs with even spacing and no shading.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the lamp, for the wick smokes when the wind comes off the breakwater. My grandmother had six turtles painted on the boathouse door at Carrick Reach, and every one of them was a different sea. The one with the flower in its shell was the one that swam to the Scilly light when the fog came down thick as wool. The old men said the hibiscus was for luck, but my grandmother said it was only for showing off.

The spiral turtle, now, that one was for finding things. Ask Mrs Pellow's boy, who lost his father's pocket watch off the slipway in nineteen-twelve. He drew a spiral in the wet sand with a crab claw, walked it three times, and there was the watch, under a bladderwrack mat, ticking away as if nothing had happened. The triangle-backed one was for keeping count. The zigzag one kept the weather honest. Nobody ever asked the one with the rings on its shell what it was for, because it looked so sure of itself that nobody liked to.
Then came the autumn the boathouse flooded and the paint ran. My grandmother stood in the shallows with a bucket and a stiff brush, scrubbing at the black lines, and she found that the turtles had moved in the night. Two of them had swum out to the harbour mouth. The flower had gone. Only the bottom-left one stayed, holding its spiral like a stubborn child. Anyway, that's why we never paint the boathouse door any colour but black, and why, if you look close, you'll see a small white turtle on the step, facing the sea, waiting for the rest of them to come home.
