Trident and Roman numerals on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black trident with three pointed prongs sits above three stacked lines of Roman numerals reading II, IV and VI. The design uses bold, even black fill with clean edges, and the numerals are smaller and finer than the trident. The close crop centres the tattoo on the upper arm against warm skin and a bright yellow top.

The tide was already turning when Mags cast off the last rope, and nobody on the quay expected the Mary Ann to make the bar before dark. Her father had painted a trident on the wheelhouse door the year the boat came off the slip, three prongs like a fork laid out for a giant's supper. He swore it kept the sea civil. Mags had never believed him, but she kept the paint fresh anyway, because the men on the other boats always looked at the door before they looked at her.

Pinned above the chart table was the tide card with its three lines of Roman numerals, II, IV and VI, which her brother had chalked there the spring he turned sixteen. II for the first time he took the skiff out alone. IV for the squall off Scarrow that brought the lifeboat out at midnight. VI for the morning he didn't come in, and the morning after, when she stood on the breakwater counting gulls because counting was easier than waiting.
The bar broke white ahead of her. She throttled back and let the swell lift the hull, and her hands stayed steady on the wheel. When the boat slid over the crest into the calm water beyond, she reached up and rubbed the old chalk off the card with her thumb, wrote a single VII beneath it, and went below to put the kettle on.
