Origami crane on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a folded origami crane, drawn with a single black outline and no shading, sits on the side of an ankle. The angular facets of the paper bird are shown with straight, sharp lines, with a few inner lines suggesting folds. The skin is pale and the background is a blue plastic sheet, with dark clothing at the top of the frame.

The ticket had come down from the restaurant deck with gravy across the table number, so Tomasz turned it over and started again. Eggs, toast, two teas, no sugar. He folded it in half, then in half again, the way his father had shown him on a bench outside a bakery in Gdańsk, and the paper held until the point where the wings should have been. By the time the galley clock read four, the bin beside the dish pit held eleven failed attempts and one that almost worked.

Maeve, the night porter, leaned on the steel counter with her tea and watched him press the next crease flat with his thumbnail. 'You're making work for the bin,' she said. 'It's a crane,' he said. 'For the rail. One for every crossing I've spent below deck when I should have been looking at the water.' She considered this for the length of a sip. 'Then you'll want a proper sheet, not that scrap.' She tore a fresh one from the order pad and smoothed it on the counter with the flat of her hand, the way you would for a child.

He finished it as the sky over Essex went from black to the colour of dishwater. The paper was thin and the facets were sharp enough to nick a finger, so he folded slowly and did not look up. On deck the wind came straight off the North Sea and pushed at his sleeves. He set the crane on the rail, let go, and it lifted, dipped, then caught the air and sailed sideways over the wake, one white point against the grey, until a gull turned to follow it. Behind him in the galley the kettle began to sing, and Tomasz went back down to make the tea.
