Two arrows and hearts on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two parallel arrows angled diagonally, with feathered fletching at the top and arrowheads at the bottom. Three small outlined hearts sit along the shafts, with one heart threaded onto each arrow and one between them. The linework is fine and mostly single-line, with light shading in the fletching, and the design is shown in black ink and grey tones on pale skin.

The wind on Carrow Flats has blown from the east for nine days, and the line is still up. You stand at the rim of the canyon with the reel in both hands and the cord running out between your fingers, tied off to the iron stake your grandmother drove in the year the second well dried. Across the gap the far tower leans in the glare, and past it the relay post waits for whatever you can get over the drop before the light goes.

The arrows are old-fashioned on purpose. The radios died in the storms, so the settlements talk in fletched ash, each shaft carrying a twist of paper under a knot that only the two houses know how to tie. You bind your note to the first arrow, a few plain lines saying the north seep is running sweet again and the goats have stopped dying. Then you slide a second arrow beside it on the cord. One shaft on its own gets torn off line by the wind. Two travel straighter, side by side, like people who have agreed on a direction.

Idris's answer comes back on the afternoon of the tenth day, pinned to a shaft scorched black down one side. The knot is wrong. It is a loop that closes twice, a shape neither of you invented, and you sit on the warm rock for a long time before you work it open with your teeth. Inside is a single line in his cramped hand: I counted the posts this morning and there are still four of us. Bring the saw and the good coffee, and tell your grandmother the stake held.

You tie the saw to the reel and the coffee to the second cord. Then you take the last blank arrow from the bundle, bind a folded square of paper to it, and fit a small knot between the other two, so that the three of them fly together. The wind takes the shaft out over the canyon, and you watch it go until the glare swallows it.
