Green and white trillium flowers and leaves tattooed down the upper arm and onto the shoulder, in a botanical style.

Trillium flowers on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large botanical tattoo of trillium flowers with broad three-part leaves, running from the shoulder down the outside of the upper arm. The flowers have white petals with soft grey shading, and the leaves are rendered in layered greens with fine vein detail. The photograph is taken outdoors with a shallow focus, which keeps the tattoo sharp against a blurred street background.

Dear Tom, the wagon lost a wheel at the second creek, so I have walked the last nine miles with the press strapped to my back, and I am writing this sitting on a fallen beech with my boots steaming. Mr Haddon says the lumber men will have the north slope cleared by October, which means the trilliums there have one more spring at best. He wants them drawn before they are cut. I want them dug up and sent to Kew packed in damp moss, which he calls sentimental and says cannot be done.

Every stem carries three leaves and three petals, with a single white flower sitting on top like a held breath. I counted forty-one clumps before noon and stopped at fifty, because counting in threes becomes a sort of prayer, and I am not certain whose. The petals fade from white to a dirty pink as the days warm, which the book calls senescence and which I think is the flower being honest about the season.

On the third day I found a clump growing in the hollow of a rotten stump, where the wood had crumbled into enough soil to feed it. I took out the drawing paper meaning to sketch it true, and found my hand kept fitting the broad leaves into the shape of a bird's wing. Haddon will not like that.

I did not dig it up. I drew it, then left it where it was, and I will tell him the root was too tangled to lift, which is more or less the truth. Post this at Ashcombe, and please keep the envelope dry. Your loving sister, Nell.
