Marta had counted the moons from the top of Corrie Gap for eleven winters, and every one of them had been a single moon. Tonight there were three, or the sky had decided to behave as if there were. The waxing crescent hung over the eastern ridge like a sickle someone had left out in the rain, the waning one sat low above the scree, and between them the full moon climbed the pass as though it had business there.

Her father's flock had come down the old drovers' track at dusk, the one that looped through the bracken in tight rings before it reached the valley. Her grandmother had said the path was laid by a woman who walked it each night with a lantern, so the drovers could find their way through the fog. If you lost the track, you followed the coil inward until the ground changed under your boots, then you turned and came out again. Marta had lost it in the snow with a lamb buttoned inside her coat, its heartbeat quick against her ribs.

She followed the spiral inward, counting turns with her numb fingers on the dry stone walls. At the centre was a flat rock the colour of old bone, and the lamb, which had been silent all evening, began to bleat and kick. She set it down. Below the rock the snow had melted into a dark hollow, and in it lay a lantern, still lit, its flame steady as a held breath.

She came out at the gap just before dawn. Behind her the footprints had already softened and filled, all except one circle where she had stopped to count, and her father was standing at the top of the pass with the lamb's mother bleating at his knee.
