A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide had gone out so far that the rocks below Mrs Penhallow's window stood wet and bare, and Edith could see the crescent of sand the sea had left behind, curved like a fingernail paring. She had been sent up to the attic to fetch the brass tin of letters, but she stood at the dormer instead, watching a line of small grey gulls walk the shore as if they were reading something written there.

Her brother Tom had carved a moon into the damp plaster of that attic years before, with the tip of a bread knife, and the swirls he had cut around its edge were still there under the cobwebs. He had said the moon was a boat with its sail furled, and that if you traced the curl of it with your finger at midnight the water would come up the stairs and carry you off to wherever the boat was going. Edith had never believed him. She traced it now anyway, in the grey light, and felt the old scratches catch on her skin like thread snagging on a nail.

When she finally came down with the tin, the boarding house was quiet and the lodgers were out on the front. Mrs Penhallow was at the kitchen table with the tide tables spread before her, a pencil in her teeth. She took the tin without a word, opened it, and drew out not letters but a sheaf of tickets for a steamer that had stopped running the year Tom went to sea. Edith looked at the date on the top one and then at the window, where the moon was already rising pale over the harbour wall, thin and curled like a question nobody had yet asked.
