Mrs Odell had been counting the bedsheets since six, because the wind off the harbour had come in overnight and stripped the line twice already. The new lodger, a man called Teodor Vance who had paid a month in advance in coins, had not come down for breakfast. On the third morning she found the ring again, and beside it a flat grey stone the size of a biscuit. Someone had scratched a figure into it, a heavy shape with two curls, one turning in on itself like the end of a fern, the other like a snail's shell pulled loose. She knew the look of such things from her late husband's fishing days: a mark the old boats used to paint on their bows so the sea would know whose they were and let them home.
She took the stone up and knocked. Teodor opened the door a hand's width, wet to the elbow, and said he had been out on the rocks at low tide looking for the thing he'd lost. It was a brass compass that had belonged to his grandfather, who had sailed out of Hull and never come back. She asked whether he wanted the stone. He said it had been waiting for him at the foot of the stairs, which she did not think was possible, and he took it with both hands.
That evening the tide went out further than she had ever seen it. From the kitchen window she watched his lamp move down the shingle, stopping where the rocks made a spiral of their own, and she left the front door on the latch and set the kettle on for two.
