Triple skull realism on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three human skulls stacked down the upper arm, with a draped cloth above and leaf-like forms below. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong highlights and deep shadows that give the bone a sculpted, three-dimensional look. Warm amber tones appear faintly in the teeth and bone edges against the mostly grey palette, and the image is a close side view of the arm against a dark background.

The third skull would not sit right, and Marcus had been cutting at it since the lamps were lit. The widow had paid in full for three, one for each child the fever had taken from her, and she had counted the silver twice on the workbench before she let it go. Her husband wanted the first skull high under a fall of carved cloth, the second lower, and the third at the foot of the slab where the acanthus leaves would close over it like pond water.

Cato, who was fifteen and proud of his hands, rubbed ochre into the grooves of the second skull so the bone would look as though the sun had worked on it for years. Marcus told him to leave the teeth alone. Teeth were the part people looked at longest, and the ochre made them look like they were yellowing in a tavern window. Cato said the widow had seen the first two and wanted the third to match. Marcus said nothing, because the third was not meant to match anything. It was smaller, and he had cut the leaves around it deeper than the others, so that the shadow would sit on it the way a hand sits on a head.
She came back at dusk, when the masons had gone and only the oil lamp was still burning on the bench. She stood before the slab for a long time without speaking. Then she lifted one finger and traced a leaf at the foot of the stone. "She used to hide under the acanthus in the garden," she said. "Nobody could ever find her there."
Marcus pinched the lamp wick until the flame went small and yellow. In the last of its light the third skull caught the highest edge of the carving, and for a moment it was the only face on the slab that seemed to be looking up.
