Shaded skull on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large skull is shown in detailed grey shading, with its eye sockets and nasal cavity in deep shadow and jagged, streaked shapes spreading upward and around it. The tattoo sits on a forearm, and the skin tones and soft lighting are warm against a dark background. The shading is smooth and tonal, giving the skull a three-dimensional, weathered appearance.

No, sit closer to the brazier, the wind off the moor takes half of what I say. You want the part they never carve on the lintel? Then hear how Sir Aldous Wrenn kept his head after the fire, for it was the head that kept him.

The keep at Harrowgate burned on Candlemas Eve, smoke rolling over the curtain wall like a grey fleece hauled off a ewe. Sir Aldous would not leave the great hall. He carried his mother's ledger out through the smoke, then turned back for the bell rope, and the beams came down on him. For three days the villagers dug through the ash. They found no body, only a skull scoured clean by the flames, its eye holes black as wet slate and a thread of smoke still curling from its nose.

Nell Garrow, the miller's girl, took it home because no one else would touch it. She set it on her windowsill facing the ruin. Each dusk the smoke came crawling off the stones and gathered round the bone like a cloak, clawing up toward the thatch in long grey wings. The priest said bury it. Nell said bury the smoke too, then, and he went off muttering. The night the Derwent flooded the lower fields, she swore she heard the bell ringing up at the keep, though that bell had melted into a puddle of bronze years before.

So when you walk the lane past the broken gatehouse and the air turns cold and grey feathers lift off the heather, don't wave, and don't stop to look. Nell's skull still sits on that sill, and the Lord of Harrowgate still wants his ledger back. He has never forgiven the miller's girl for keeping his head.
