Triskele, daffodils and dragonfly design sketch

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of a design centred on a triskele of three spirals inside a triangle, framed by a circular band of interlaced geometric pattern. Daffodils with shaded petals surround the central motif, and a filigree-winged dragonfly with trailing swirls sits below. The shading is in soft graphite greys on pale paper, with a balance of crisp outlines and detailed curls.

Dear Marnie,

The daffodils came up in the tubs on the fourth-floor walkway the week after you left. Mrs Okonedo from number 41 says it's the council's doing, not mine, but I know better. I watered them with the washing-up water all February and talked to them like an idiot. You'd have laughed.

The lift is still broken, so I've been taking the stairs with the shopping and counting the landings out loud. On the ninth floor someone has chalked three curls on the concrete wall beside the bins, round and round like a cat's tail, and under them a little ring of zigzags, the sort Dad used to cut into the bread board. Nobody ever tells you who does these things. I've decided it's a boy called Tomasz who lives on the fifth and has never once looked up.

Last Tuesday a dragonfly came in through the open kitchen window and sat on the tap for an hour. Its wings were lace, honestly, all little curls like the ironwork on the church gate. I didn't move. When the sun went behind the flats it lifted off and went down past the balcony rail, and I swear it flew straight over the daffodils as if checking they were still there.

I think I'm going to stay another year. The yellow is ridiculous this spring. Write back and tell me what you're doing with the flat in Leeds, and don't say it's fine.

Love, Ruth
