Triskelion tattoo on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white studio photograph of a shirtless man seen from behind, with his hands clasped behind his head and his face turned away from the camera. A small triskelion of three interlocking spirals sits centred between the shoulder blades on his upper back. The solid black ink has soft, slightly blurred edges, and the plain grey backdrop keeps the focus on the muscles of the back and the tattoo.

Your master says the punch must be cut before the sun reaches the workshop doorway, because after that the hand shakes with the heat. You have been at it since before dawn, bent over a disc of bronze no wider than a fig, and the three legs of the emblem are finally roughed out in the grit. Now comes the spiral. Each arm must curl inward on itself, turning the way the water turns in the harbour mouth when the wind goes round to the south.

You cut the first turn cleanly. The second wanders, and you have to file it back. The third you start twice, and both times the line runs the wrong way, unwinding outward like a rope someone has let go. Your master, Dionysios, is hunched over a jar of olive oil across the room, pretending not to watch. He grunts when he sees the spiral. He does not tell you to fix it.
Instead he takes a fresh coin blank from the box, presses it into the warm wax of the tablet, and flicks the whole thing across the table with one finger. It spins, wobbles, spins again, and does not stop until it knocks against the leg of the bench. He lifts it and holds it up to the light from the door. The curl of the wax catches the morning and looks, for a moment, like the start of something rather than the end of it.
You pick up the punch again. The spiral does not need to be perfect. It only needs to keep turning.
