Turquoise jewellery and forearm heart tattoo
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman sits in denim jeans and a black lace bralette, with her head cropped out of frame. Her jewellery includes large turquoise stones set in silver, a pendant necklace, cuffs, bangles and rings. Her tattoos are dark ink, including a small heart-shaped design on the forearm and marks across the shoulder and upper arm, and the photograph is warm and softly lit against a cactus background.

Ansel cut the stone from the hill above the dry wash in the autumn his knees gave out, and he carried it down to the forge in a flour sack because his pockets had holes. It was blue going green, with a dark thread of matrix running through it like a vein under the skin of a wrist. The town said it was too fine to sell and too heavy to wear, and that he should keep it for his daughter's dowry. Ansel said nothing. Forty years at the bench had taught him that a stone tells you what it wants before you touch the file.

It wanted a heart. He did not know why, and he did not argue with it. He beat a length of silver thin on the anvil, bent it round the stone, and drew the edges up into two soft lobes that met at a point, the way the stone had been broken off the rock. When Teodora came through on the freight road with her mule and her brother's debts, she tried the cuff on and found it closed over her wrist as if it had been waiting. She paid him in coins still warm from someone else's hand, and she went east.
Nine winters later the cuff came back along the same road, dented, the silver gone soft at one lobe where a river had taken hold of it. The stone was whole. Teodora had sent no letter, only a scrap of paper tucked under the band that read: it carried me across the water. Ansel worked the dents out with a leather strop and a little rouge, and when he hung the cuff on the nail above the bench he saw that the inside of the silver had worn bright in a curve, exactly where a wrist had been.
