Botanical flower sprig on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A sprig of small blue-grey flowers on branching stems, with green leaves and a pink-tinted stem at the base, is tattooed on the upper arm. The linework is clean and the petals are lightly shaded, with colour used softly across the leaves and stems. The arm is raised against a blurred yellow and grey background, with the tattoo placed centrally in the frame.

Dearest Wren, the frost came early to Haddow Vale this year, and the mill pond skinned over the week after you left on the Saltway wagon. I have kept the two bread knives sharp, as you asked, and I have taken the goats up to the high pasture myself, which Mother says is not work for a woman with my cough. I told her the goats don't mind my cough. They only mind the dog.

Something odd happened on Tuesday. The clerk from Castellan Ross came down the lane with his ledger and his tin box of wax seals, counting who had paid the hearth tax. He wanted the names of everyone in the lower cottages. When I gave him ours he turned a page back, stopped on the name Dunmore, and read it twice. He asked whether the Dunmore girl had gone south. I said she had gone to sell her sewing. He looked at me for a long moment, wrote something small in the margin, and closed the book.

Then he bent by the well wall and picked a little bunch of the forget-me-nots that grow in the cracks there, and pushed them into his buttonhole. He said the queen's men had orders to keep the blue flowers off the saltway, since the blue flower was the old rebels' mark. Then he laughed and said the orders were foolish, and he did not take them out.

I have pressed a sprig for you between these pages. Do not let the wagon-men see it. Keep it in your boot, where the seals can't reach. Your loving sister, Hesper.
