Green grinning cat creature on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a green, shaggy cat-like creature with a wide toothy grin, glowing pink eyes and pointed ears, with one hand raised and a striped tail curling down the leg. Bold black outlines define the body, with shading in darker greens and red and yellow accents on the claws, ears and mouth. The design fills the frame against a plain skin background, with the leg running vertically through the photo.

The fiddler at Harrow Mill would not stop playing, not with the cat sitting on the rafter above the dancers. It had come in through the loading door during the second reel, a creature the colour of new bracken, shaggy as a wet hearthrug, and it grinned at everyone who passed beneath it. Its eyes glowed pink like coals someone had breathed on.

Nobody danced with their back to it. Mary Coyle, who swept the boards and kept the ledger, said a thing like that wanted a partner or it would take one. So Tom Ashby, a thin man with a bad knee, struck up a jig nobody had heard since the old king died, and the cat's striped tail began to swing in time with the bow.

Mary took the cat's raised hand, which was cold and had one finger too many, and they went round the floor together. The cat's teeth clicked at every turn. By the last chord it had worn itself out, and it sank back onto the beam with its tail hanging down like a bell rope.

When the lamps were lit again in the morning, the rafter was bare except for a single yellow claw lying in the dust. Mary kept it in the ledger between the rent and the coal bills. Every year on the night of the fair, the fiddler came back, tuned his strings, and waited for the grin to come through the loading door.
