Twin globe maps across upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
Two large circular globes sit side by side across the upper back, each drawn with fine latitude and longitude lines and a dotted border. The landmasses, including the Americas on the left and Africa on the right, are shaded in red-brown with darker grey detailing for depth. The ink is mostly a single warm red tone, and the two rounded designs are centred and evenly spaced on the back.

The dough had sat too long in the trough, and Hedda knew it by the sour breath of it before she lifted the cloth. Her brother's stool was empty by the hearth. The harbour bell had rung three, and the fishermen would be climbing the hill for their bread before the light came up grey over the water.

Their father had left them two brass globes and a quarrel. One globe showed the western sea, the other the eastern, and each child had claimed the half that looked larger. Tomas said the Americas were a fat thing that swallowed the ocean. Hedda said Africa had the better coastline and the better rivers. They argued over the globes while they kneaded, turning the spheres with floured hands until the lines of latitude were grey with dust.
She found him in the back room at last, asleep across the flour sacks with one brass globe held against his chest. She did not wake him. She took the dough, divided it, and rolled two great rounds, pressing into each the shapes she remembered from the globes: a long lean coast, a wide shield of land, the spread of islands scattered like crumbs. She scored the lines of longitude with the back of a knife and dusted them with white.
When the loaves came out brown and split at the seams, she set them on the sill where the first light would find them. Tomas woke to the smell, saw the two round loaves and the two halves of the world, and said nothing for a long time. Then he tore a piece from the western one and handed her the other half.
