World map tattoo on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a world map with the continents outlined in fine black linework and filled with intricate ornamental patterns, including medallion-like motifs, scrolls and paisley shapes. Shading is limited to greys within the outlines, and the design is entirely black ink with no colour. The map spans most of the upper back, with North America at the top left, South America below it, and Africa and Australia towards the centre and right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit where I can see you, under the quince tree, and stop picking at that scab. Your great-uncle had a map of the world pinned up in the back room of the shop in Leeds, and it was an ugly thing. Plain blue sea, plain brown land, the coastlines drawn by a man who had clearly never been sick on a ferry in his life.

So when the shop closed, I took it down and went at it with a fine nib. I didn't correct a single line. I filled it. Every coast got a pattern from somewhere I had been or meant to go: a medallion for the round heart of the south, a paisley curl pressed into the thumb of the continent that hangs off the bottom, scrolls for the rough top corner where the ice sits. I worked with a steady wrist and breathed on the paper now and then, and the ink dried grey where my breath had caught it.

Your mother said I was making a mess of good paper. The little islands were the hardest. Some were too small to fill, so I gave each one a single dot, the way you'd mark a stone in a stream. The big island in the bottom right I left for last, because I had never set foot on it, and I wouldn't fill a place I'd only read about with guesses.

Hand me that jug. When I'm gone, the map is yours, but mind it at the edges. You'll notice I never touched the sea. All that ink, all those patterns, and the blue was left plain on purpose, so that anyone holding it could see where the land stopped and the rest of the world began.
